    David,
I notice you have said in a few posts that your grades and academics are 40% of the weight on your application. How did you come up with these numbers?

Hi and thanks for your inquiry.

    David,

I am reposting the same question I asked yesterday because I think it was accidentally skipped

    I’m sorry about that!

My real question is, in your opinion, what are my chances for getting into Georgetown (McDonough) part-time, evening program?
I got a 670 on the GMAT (99% verbal, much lower on quant, don’t remember, 6 AWA), 3.3 GPA, and 3.5 years of work experience in accounting and marketing at a top national law firm. According to their stats, it seems to me like I am at their mean for GMAT and GPA, but I am concerned about my lower quantitative score. I am really putting all my eggs in this one basket since it is the best program in the DC area and the others are ranked much lower. Any advice would be appreciated.

I am not entirely convinced that you need to retake the GMAT. It would depend on how much effort you put into your prep the first time around, and how much concerns about your quantitative skills might be offset by your work experience (accounting) and undergraduate coursework. With well-prepared applications (putting the right spin on those quantitative skills) you should at least have a shot.

Best of luck on your applications!

    Hi,

I currently have a 3.44 GPA and will be graduating this Fall with a major in Film and Media & a minor in English. I’m lacking in the “work experience” area – I’ve only interned for two seperate film production companies this summer for roughly 3 months.

Would my early graduation time (I’m graduating a year and 2 quarters early) compensate for my lack of work? I was planning to work until I get a chance to apply to business school in September of 2009.

With a GMAT score in the 670 range and an acceptable application, which schools would be most realistic for me to get into?

I was looking into Santa Clara University, Boston University, William and Mary, Rice University, Syracuse University, just to name a few.

    Thanks for your time!
    J.

Hello, this is a GREAT forum.

I took my GMAT for 2nd time last week and was able to raise my score from 720 (3 years ago) to 770. I am very happy. =)

    Here is my profile:

    GMAT: 770 (49Q, 47V)
UGPA: 2.6 from Big 10 school in History
Graduate GPA: 3.5 from Boston University for MS in Information Systems
    Age: 37 (already!)

I failed both calculus AND economics as undergrad. But that was so long ago, people who were born back then are now failing calculus and economics in undergrad. But I have since received an A (not just A-) on Stats and Calculus course from Boston Univrsity.

I have been in the IT industry (I am Asian) for 12 years and have good career progression. I have, however, no formal management experience.

Do I have a legitimate shot at the following programs? (in order of preference)

    1)Cornell Accelerated 1 year MBA.
    2)UCLA FEMBA
    3)Berkeley Part Time MBA.

    Thanks

Hi Manish and thanks for your inquiry.

    Hi David,

    Greetings to you!

I am Manish Tiwari, presently working as a Lead Engineer for a Global Telecom Client Teleglobe Canada Inc. since one year in Canada . I have a total work experience of 4+ years in handling Telecom projects for various Global Clients across the Globe.

I therefore wish to raise my Career in persuing a regular MBA programs in either Indian School of Business, Hyderabad in India or any other top B-schools overseas in either USA or in Canada.

My GMAT score is 710 But, my Undergraduate score is 61% aggregate marks.

Am I eligible to get an admission in top B-schools with my profile as mentioned above.

I believe I may have spoken to you on the phone the other day. I think you can be competitive at ISB but I’d encourage you to consider retaking the GMAT if you’re confident you can boost your score by at least 30 points.

Can u list some of B-schools in either USA or in Canada which can accept my application for admissions to their MBA programmes based upon my above profile.

See the red font reply on page 104 of this thread for why it would be highly unprofessional and incompetent of me to recommend specific schools without first knowing much more about you.

Your reply would be very valuable and encouraging to my ambitions.

    Thanks and warm regards,
    Manish Tiwari

Hi and thanks for your inquiry.

    David,
I notice you have said in a few posts that your grades and academics are 40% of the weight on your application. How did you come up with these numbers?

Excellent question. We employ dozens of former admissions officers and often times we have access to information others are not privy to.

I’ve seen internal documents for several admissions offices and sometimes they assign weights to the various application components to help train new admission officers and to try to assure that all applicants are treated similarly. While we certainly respect these schools and have good relationships with many of them, I believe I can safely say that the weight given to the academic qualifications tends to be about 35% to 40% and that is what I have reported on this thread and elsewhere for several years now.

Best of luck on your applications!

You’ve provided some fairly limited information; conspicuously missing is your undergraduate performance, career progression, and community involvement. Regardless, your GMAT score puts you at a disadvantage considering your competitive demographic if you are interested in the selective b-schools that tend to have the greatest impacts on furthering their graduates’ careers. I would encourage you to consider retaking the test. Feel free to check out the GMAT prep section (http://www.admissionsconsultants.com/gmat/) of our website for prep tips and practice questions.

Depending on your GMAT quant and verbal percentiles, your career progression, extracurriculars and potential story themes, you might be competitive at these schools. Unfortunately, there’s really not enough information here to say.

Best of luck on your applications!

You are cutting it a little close with your GMAT score; however you do have some compelling aspects to your candidacy. I see below your question regarding retaking the exam and I do encourage you to at least consider giving it a second shot. If your personal timeline does not allow for this, with well-prepared applications you have at least a decent chance at Carlson and some of the other schools on your list.

Hi J. and thanks for your inquiry.

While the early graduation can help you if properly spun, it unfortunately cannot mitigate the lack of work experience. You will need to find some ways to communicate your maturity and professional development to counter this concern.

With a GMAT score in the 670 range and an acceptable application, which schools would be most realistic for me to get into?

I was looking into Santa Clara University, Boston University, William and Mary, Rice University, Syracuse University, just to name a few.

With well-prepared applications, you are targeting the right range of schools. School selection is an important and in-depth part of the services that our consultants provide to our clients. For additional school recommendations, I would really need to know more about you. See the red font reply on page 104 of this thread of why it would be highly unprofessional for me to provide specific school recommendations in the limited scope of this forum.

I would encourage you, however, to be sure you really want an MBA now. Because if you later decide you want an MBA from a top school, obtaining an MBA from another school, such as BU or Rice, will prevent you from doing so.

    Thanks for your time!
    J.

Best of luck on your applications!

Hi David — first of all, thanks for all these responses for so many years. It is very helpful to read the advice you have offered to others.

Here is my “profile,” I’d love to get your feedback.

Also, this seems to be important, so let me say that I am a male of Indian origin but have lived in the United States since I was young, and am currently a US Citizen. Will this render me any different than a normal candidate?

I graduated from a top 5 engineering undergrad with a degree in Computer Science. I had a 3.4 undergrad GPA with a 3.6 Computer Science GPA. I have taken the GMAT a year ago, and scored a 710 (much stronger math, 6 AWA). How much would my relatively low verbal score hurt my chances? Does the 6 on the writing help make that up?

As far as my career, I worked for one year at a healthcare software company. Then I moved to work at a large internet company (lets call it YGM) in Silicon Valley as a software engineer. At YGM, I advanced very quickly. I was given my first promotion within 9 months, and then another at 16 months when I was promoted to being the engineering lead for a entire YGM product. Throughout this time, I won several team-wide and YGM-wide “internal entrepreneurship” competitions for product ideas that I brought to life (with a partner). At appx 1 1/2 years at the company, myself and a co-worker invented a product which was picked up by the management, and was fast-tracked to be released to the public. We were given 9 months and resources to make it a reality. We wore all hats from designing to branding to marketing to working with Legal and worked very hard. This product was released and I was interviewed by several international news agencies about the release and I also presented it at some conferences. I also filed a US-patent related to this product. In total, I have had 4 years of work exp so far.

Along with this work, I also founded a Personal MBA group within YGM. I got YGM to fund our study materials, and also other things. This group grew to 60 people at the YGM silicon valley campus, and I also helped found a similar sister group at our southern california campus which also saw good response.

6 months ago I left YGM and founded a startup with some former co-workers. This start-up has grown quite well over the last 6 months, but still hasn’t reached a crazy critical mass yet.

In the part time this year, since december, I have started and built up a Social Media Apps company and have produced 2 wildly successful products. One of them has had over 3 million users, and another is well on its way to a similar success. I have a team of a few people working for me. I have been able to create a significant revenue stream (more than my 6-figure YG salary), and have had several buy-out offers, which I have declined so far.

In my free time, I play tennis, run, write poetry, play guitar (and do some amature music recording). I have also done some volunteer activities off and on. During the tsunami, I founded a website that raised a few thousand dollars. In college I was the head of our Indian student associations’s volunteering division. I was also on the Executive board of our Engineering Council, and also was leader in a student-run technical consulting group, which did projects for companies in the area, on a donation basis. I have also spent time volunteering at a medical camp in India.

My question is, what are my chances of getting into either: Harvard, Stanford, MIT, or any other top 10 school? I know my undergrad GPA isn’t overly strong, and neither do I have a super-strong GMAT score, and super strong extra curriculars.

What advice would you have for me as I start my apps for fall 2009? Hope my profile wasn’t too long-winded…I tried to give you as much info as possible. Thanks for your feedback!

    Kelvin

    Hi David,

This is truly an excellent forum to go through. Thank you for your fantastic responses, they were really insightful

I was applying to US BSchools this year and would really appreciate if you could review my profile and give me your advice on what would be the best B schools to apply to.

    Background:

    – 740 GMAT (97%) – 50 Q (94%), 39 V (97%), AWA 6.0
    – Electronics and Communications Engineering major from a Indian University (Manipal Institute of Technology). CGPA of 3.8/4
    – 24 y/o Female / Indian origin. Will be 25 by Fall 2009 :-)

    University work experience:

    – Interned at IBM for 6 months to deliver a project for their vendor management team
    – Interned at an Indian FMGC major (ITC) – worked with their technology team that implemented an “info-bahn” – a countrywide WAN for supporting their strong supply chain processes
    – Interned at a DSP based media solutions start up company called Epigon. Implemented an algorithm on a DSP chip to achieve the best possible equalizer settings for their one of their media solutions

    Professional work experience:

    – 3 years in the General Electric company and a graduate of the Information Management Leadership Program – an entry level fast track leadership program that gives exposure in 4 diverse areas of the business.
    – Joined Pricewaterhouse Coopers as a Consultant in their advisory Services division in a team called Performance Improvement earlier this month. Would effectively have completed about 11 months here before joining B-school assuming I get an admit in Fall 2009

Have held multiple project management and project leader roles. I am Six Sigma GB certified as well.

    Goals:

I would like to move to a strategic consulting role after B school. My core areas of interest is to consult with high tech companies (media, telecom, healthcare). I would like to go to a B school that offers either a solid general management program or one with a strong focus on management in technology. Long team I’d like to move into a more operational role, probably head a profit centre/sbu.

    Extracurriculars:

    – During undergrad, I captained my college swimming team for 3 years. I was also on the athletics teams on the field events. I was an active member of the Literary and Debating society.
    – During my professional career, I’ve had a chance to explore several areas. I was the woman’s champion at my office and conducted several events aimed at improving diversity ratios and making the work place more “woman friendly”. I have been an active Volunteer for organizations’ corporate social responsibility initiatives. I’ve cordinated several fund raising events and bought 2 NGO’s under the umbrella of organizations we support. I’ve lead numerous employee engagement campaigns and been reecognized for them as well
    – Active Quizzer and a regional finalist and one of India’s most prestigious corporate quizzes. Also instrumental in setting up quiz clubs within GE and PwC to popularize quizzing thru blogs, quiz events etc
    – I play Golf, have a “not so great” handicap, but I have been a member of a national level ladies golf union for the past 5 years. Still practice/play for about 8-10 hours a week.
    – A six sigma enthusiast, but unfortunately this was restricted to just within my organization. I was a trainer for Six Sigma Green Belt certification and have trained and mentored over 100 employees at GE

    Major concern and questions:

    1) Both of my planned recommendations are from my last firm, because of the short time spent at my current firm, and since I don’t want to give any indications that I may be leaving just yet. Is this a problem?

    2) I have personal reasons for wanting to apply and convert schools in and around California. I’d take up a lower ranked school if it were in California as opposed to probably a higher ranked school on the East Coast

    3) Whats going to be the impact on applicants like me give the higher than usual volume of applications this year?

I would really appreciate your inputs on what I must consider as stretch schools, achievables and sure shots. Of course my list looks like this – Stanford (stretch), UCB, USC (probables), sure shots (?). UCLA in R2 if I dont convert any in R1.

    Thanks so much!
