ModeratorHi and thanks for your inquiry.
I have a LSAT question. Should I take the LSAT in October and apply early with a possibly less than opitmal score or take it in December when I have had more time to study and probably get a better score?
Good question. The answer really depends on the schools you are targeting and whether a score achievable by October will put you in the range where you need to be. It’s also possible you might be able to achieve your full potential LSAT score by October with a good prep strategy.
Please don’t hesitate to call us at 1.800.809.0800 to discuss either of these items in greater detail.
Best of luck with your applications!

ParticipantHi Ms. Post,
I graduated from University of the Pacific in 2012 with a double major in International Relations and a double major in Japanese (I studied abroad in Japan for 1 semester.)
The average inst. gpa i beleive was around 2.9 and I got a 3.51 avg (LSAC-3.49) but I do have upward trends, with 3.9 in last two semesters. I took my LSAT twice, once I took 2 yrs ago in my 3rd year, hoping to get it done with early but only got 159, so I retook it for the 2nd time today and am thinking, based on my practice test scores and my feelings of the test, that I’ll probably get around 165-166. Assuming I do get the score, I don’t think that would be good enough for me to get into a Top 14 law school, even the lowest ones.. would it??
If I do end up getting lower than that score or about the same but is not high enough, then I would need to retake in December, but exactly how bad would it seem to the law school admissions committee for an applicant to have taken Three Times?? Since the 1st time was 2 yrs ago, would they not look at the lowest score as much? Or would it be better off just to cancel my October test now without knowing what I get and retake in December?Thank you in advance for all your help!
Sincerely,
Jamesjameskim

I’d hate to say “no” based on the little I have here to work with, but I’m nearly certain we’d at least ask you to strongly consider some slightly lower ranked schools to ensure your chances for admission for 2014 matriculation.

This depends on several factors. What range of schools are you targeting? How well do you think you can do if you take the LSAT in December? Feel free to call us at 1.800.809.0800 to arrange for a complimentary assessment of your candidacy. We should be able to help you make an informed decision before the cancellation deadline.
Thank you in advance for all your help!

ParticipantHi David,
Thanks for this great advice. I have a bit of a dilemma. I want to apply early to Columbia but I got a 168. I think I can get a 172 or above if I retake it in December. What should I do and please give me a quick reply!
Many thanks!

Unless you are absolutely stellar in every other aspect of your candidacy, we would probably recommend applying in the regular round if you are indeed very confident you can improve the score by at least 4 points. Please don’t hesitate to call us if you want to discuss this in any more detail.
Many thanks!
My pleasure!

InactiveHi,
I’m only interested in applying to Yale and other schools in the top 5. I have a 3.9 G.P.A. in mathematics and philosophy. I am fluent in Italian and German. I just took the December LSAT and am hoping for a score in the low 170s. What are my chances of getting into a top 5 law school?
Many thanks!

The double major of math and philosophy is indeed very intriguing and it may be worth mentioning why you chose that combination in your application. Based on the limited information, it would appear you should be competitive at the top 5 law schools with good extracurricular activities and well-prepared applications.
Many thanks!
Best of luck on your applications!

ParticipantHi. Looking to apply next fall. Should I plan on taking the LSAT in June and how much time will I need to prepare? Thanks!

Hi. Looking to apply next fall. Should I plan on taking the LSAT in June and how much time will I need to prepare? Thanks!
Good question!
Different test takers need differing amounts of prep time, but I can tell you most will need more than the short amount of time available before February LSAT. Our advice is to complete a diagnostic test such as one from 10 New Actual, Official LSAT PrepTest from LSAC. Once you see how you have scored, you will have a much better idea of not just how much study time you may need but also the specific areas of the test that you should focus on the most. Ideally, you will take the test by June to allow yourself a chance to retake it in October on the chance you don’t achieve the score you were anticipating.
Please don’t hesitate to use our complimentary LSAT review section at http://admissionsconsultants.com/lsat/ to augment your studies.
Best of luck on your LSAT and applications!

ParticipantI’m graduating this fall from a top 35 university. I’m scoring in the low 170s on practice LSATs and have a 3.8. I am going to target top 10 schools and want to know what I should be doing with my gap semester? Thanks!

Good question! Depending on your profile, working in a legal environment could strengthen both your admission and future placement candidacies. If this does turn out to be the recommended route (we would really like to know more about your candidacy in case there is something more urgent that needs to be mitigated) and you have something lined up early, this could be some great material to sprinkle into your application.
Best of luck with your applications!

ParticipantI graduated from with a 3.6 in economics from UCSD three years ago and have decided to go to law school. I am scheduled to take the LSAT in June and expect to be in the low 170s. I am very worried about letters of reference since I didn’t stay in touch with any faculty members. Can I get into a top 5 or 10 law school?

Hi and thanks for your inquiry.
Good question! Assuming you have decent extracurricular activities and work experience (or something similar to fill in the three years since you graduated from UCSD), we should be able to help you mitigate any concerns about recommendations at the top law schools.
Best of luck with your applications!

ParticipantHi.
I’m doing well in college and thinking about law school. Unfortunately I didn’t do so well in high school and my college is not highly ranked. How much is that going to hurt my chances?

Hi and thanks for your inquiry.
As long as your school is properly accredited, you will be fine. By properly accredited, is it accredited by the state where it is located? If the answer is yes and you perform well, admission to even a top-tier school will be a distinct possibility.
Best of luck with your applications!
