I took the MCAT 6 times and got 29 as my most recent score. My first score was 24, and it has gone up and down for the 6 MCAT’s in the past 3 years. My GPA is 3.6. I’m applying to medical schools now, but in case I don’t get in, how would you recommend me to improve my credentials? How much can publications in basic sciences help an applicant’s profile? Do publications in clinical sciences help it more? Where would you place publications among the applicant credentials that range from the most to the least important beginning with GPA, MCAT, graduate course work, letters of recomm., and clinical experience? Thank you so much for your help.Dear Ting,
Thanks for your inquiry. First of all, committees want to know that the applicant will not be an academic risk. Thus, academic credentials are the first hurdles to get over. After that, other personal qualities, EC’s, etc. become important. Publications are a factor. In your case, your MCAT may be a concern. Have you thought of applying to D.O. programs, or Caribbean schools? Those may be an option to consider. If you want a thorough assessment of your situation, contact our office.

I know that Georgetown special master’s program includes courses to improve low MCAT’s so that some students can retake it after completing their program. I was also told that students with 29 MCAT have got into med. school after completing BU special master’s program. Since I took all my MCAT’s except for the most recent one with preparation time of one month or less, does it help for the admissions committee to see me get 30+ one more and one last time after 6 months of full-time preparation, which I never did? Is there nothing I can do to change the negative impression created by my multiple MCAT history? Is there anything that can make it matter less than my most recent performance if I can get 30+ with the right type of preparation?Ting

Inorganic Chemistry, Lab
Organic Chemistry, Lab
Physics, Lab
Calcalus
I was going to go to a postbacc program but I cannot find one that accepts students in Jan., instead of Aug. I thought of completing the classes on my own and hopefully attending medical school in Aug. 2006. Do medical schools frown on students finishing there degrees and completing additional classes without a degree plan or certificate from a college? My GPA is a 3.6. I don’t have any extra curiccular activities but I work as a Surgical Tech for the military.
Thank you for any advice.donior felton
