BTW after this Spring (of my Junior year), if I get all A-‘s (I’m thinking a worst case scenario; I want to get better than 3.7 and did this semester) I would have a cumulative GPA of ~3.43. Would that be good enough if I managed to get a 30 on the MCAT (I also want to do better than that)?

    Thank you

I’m a Cornell University undergrad double majoring in Sociology (with a business etc. concentration) and Biology (with a Neurobio concen.) in her junior year. I did really badly my freshman year (I got a few Cs basically in the weed out intro Bio and Chem courses but not at all because I’m bad at biology or chemistry). I’m in the same graduating class that had all of the suicides our freshman year. I know how hard and extremely competitive my school is. There were girls crying during some of my finals, and most of us are very capable and hard-working students. I’m kicking myself over my freshman year, but I also learned from it (and didn’t jump off of a bridge).

I’ve improved tremendously though. I got a B+ in the first semester of Orgo and an A- in the second semester. And I know that our Orgo courses are comparatively difficult as opposed to other schools, and med schools specifically want us to take Orgo here. I’ve also gotten an A- in the first semester of Physics (going to take the next this Spring). I just got all A’s this semester in classes that included Biochem (a two semester biochem course fit in to one semester as an auto-tutorial course), an upper-level Neurobio course, and two Sociology courses. I’ve also just done better overall in various non-intro science courses that I took toward both my majors. I’m pretty confident that I’m going to keep doing better.

My course rigidity definitely increased since freshman year (and I’ve handled it well), but I still have a ~3.1 GPA now. I know I’m going to get some very good letters that reflect me. I volunteer, and I’ve shadowed multiple doctors and intend to keep shadowing. I haven’t taken the MCAT yet, so I know that my fate hasn’t been decided. But I guess I want to ask you 5 things (because I definitely don’t know everything):

    1) Could anyone evaluate me and give a general opinion?
    2) What should I aim for on the MCAT?
    3) Will a med school care that I’ve been doing so well subsequent to freshman year?
    4) Will a med school consider how hard Cornell is?
    5) I’ve also been told by one of my Orgo Professors in a meeting that med schools won’t care about my freshman year, and what matters is that i’ve been doing better. Is he right?

    Thank you
