ModeratorHello everyone!
Campus reform reports Harvard Law School professor and victim of alleged hate crime Randall Kennedy addressed a roundtable discussion Monday night and stated “Harvard Law School is not the enemy.” He also urged students in attendance to “avoid needlessly alienating people” when addressing racial issues.
If you weren’t aware, Professor Kennedy was one of the African American professors who had black tape placed over their portraits in a grand corridor at HLS. He also published an op ed in the New York Times calling for students to refrain from reaching any conclusions. While many students seemed to appreciate and agree with his comments, the Campus Reform article contains many quotes from other students who clearly don’t agree with his viewpoint.
If you’re considering HLS, please be aware that it appears the issues that came to a head this past fall won’t be dissipating any time soon. While we’re certainly not trying to discourage you from attending HLS, we do want to ensure you have all the facts in front of you and, as usual, we strongly encourage you to do your own research on this subject when you (presumably?) visit the campus — before accepting any admissions offer.
Best of luck with your applications!
Sincerely,
David Petersam

ParticipantI’m glad this topic is being discussed. Any HLS students care to chime in?

ParticipantMy partner knows firsthand how tense it is. The Royall Must Fall leader, Alex Clayborne, accused opponents of being intellectual cowards for not debating him. Wrong Alex. They have probably taken on more debt than you and don’t want an undeserved “r” label to limit their career prospects.

ParticipantThis might be getting good

ParticipantLady Justice is supposed to be blind. HLS and other law schools are supposed to teach the law. If these activists don’t like the law, perhaps they should attempt to change the laws after graduating. Demanding race theory classes just shows these protesters aren’t serious about studying law.

ModeratorHello everyone!
Just a brief update that Harvard Magazine reports a committee has recommended removing the controversial Royall shield that has been linked to slavery.
Best of luck with your applications!

ParticipantI don’t think too many people expect the group to let up after the agreement to remove the shield. There is a lot of cynicism that members are putting a lot of time into occupying and protesting and they may make excuses when grades are released and cry racism when recruiting is finished.
Also, many students are all for many of the group’s demands. They just object to their antagonistic methods.

ParticipantI have a bad feeling this is a hoax to keep this group in the press. Just like the black tape was alleged to be.
April 10, 2016 at 2:48 pm #51601hlsso
ParticipantTheir intolerance came through loud and clear when they initially refused to allow a 3L to hang posters critical of them in their occupied hall. I don’t think anyone really believes that they were being surveilled. I agree with tbatton. It wreaks of being a hoax.
April 16, 2016 at 6:21 pm #51642hlsso
ParticipantThey are refusing to share the evidence with Harvard police. Either they have something to hide and this whole thing is a hoax or perhaps they are extremely sensitive and weak.

ParticipantHLS must be so proud of them.
