Hello everyone!
If you were wondering what ramifications might come from the University of Missouri protests and the way their administration handled them, ABC17News.com posted some statistics on the application volume. We assume no one will be surprised to learn that the fallout is rather substantial.
Mizzou is bracing for a 25% drop in freshmen enrollment and is enacting severe budget cuts that include hiring and salary freezes. You can see all the statistics through the link above, but African-American applications and graduate school applications both plunged 19%. Compounding matters is the expected drop in out-of-state enrollment which brings with it not just simply the “prestige” for rankings purposes but also a disproportionate share of tuition revenue. Out-of-state applicants generally have more school choices and can afford to be more finicky.
Anecdotally speaking, we had numerous conversations with clients (both applicants and parents) who felt quite negative towards Mizzou. In our graduate school practice, the j-school applicants were significantly less attracted to Mizzou than previous years. We are especially interested in seeing how the protests may impact the rankings for the nation’s oldest journalism school.
Best of luck with your applications!
Sincerely,
David Petersam
