The UIC Graduate Employees Organization announced that its striking members will return to work on Monday and vote on an agreement reached on Friday. The agreement calls for a 14% raise over three years. Furthermore, the agreement will allow the members to make up for the hours lost during their strike.

Seven students were arrested at Loyola University Chicago yesterday. They blocked the entrance to LUC’s administrative offices and called for the school to treat them like employees and increase their stipends from $20,000 to $26,000. Graduate School Dean Fr. Thomas Regan insists there will be no negotiations. He stated, “Our stipends are competitive with our competition, we don’t have the multi-billion dollar endowments that some of the Ivy Leagues might have and so we gave them the best possible package that Loyola can afford.”

Campus police removed 16 protesting graduate students at University of Wisconsin-Madison when they refused to leave when the building closed. Police noted they were peaceful and no charges were pressed. The students were protesting for “living wages” for their union members, lower fees and improved working conditions.

We just blogged about a proposed NLRB ruling that graduate students at private universities are not considered employees. We also explained how this broad-brush ruling differs from previous NLRB rulings and what it likely means for most private universities.

The Harvard Crimson reports that the university’s graduate student union will hold a strike authorization vote next week. However, the level of support seems unclear. The Harvard Graduate Students Union-United Automobile Workers will need two-thirds of the votes to be authorized to call a strike.
