ModeratorHello everyone!
The University of Chicago’s graduate student union, Graduate Students United, has decided to bypass the NLRB and negotiate directly with the University of Chicago. The union is concerned a likely unfavorable ruling could harm unionization efforts against all private university graduate school students. Since a vital role of the NLRB is the certification that requires employers to bargain in good faith, it will now be up to Graduate Students United to find a new way to convince the university to recognize them.
Best of luck with your applications!
Sincerely,
David Petersam

ModeratorHello everyone!
The Daily Pennsylvanian just reported that GET-UP, the group hoping to unionize graduate student workers at University of Pennsylvania has just submitted a petition to withdraw to the NLRB earlier this evening. They are now awaiting an official acceptance notice. The reason they gave was the same given by Graduate Students United at University of Chicago in the preceding post.
It’s certainly looking like the graduate student employee union may be falling dormant for at least the duration of this presidency.
Best of luck with your applications!

David Petersam

ModeratorHello everyone!
The election Brown University and Stand Up for Graduate Student Employees agreed to is now underway. Polling stations for graduate students opened November 14 and will remain open through November 19. Votes can be cast in person or via absentee ballot. The election is being conducted outside the NLRB and the American Arbitration Association is overseeing the voting.
If the Brown graduate students vote to unionize, they will be affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers. (This was set by a vote in 2017.)
Best of luck with your applications!

In what unions are hailing as a major victory, Columbia University announced it would recognize the graduate student union and it was willing to negotiate — under certain circumstances. Columbia wishes to “retain the exclusive right to manage the institution consistent with our educational and research mission.” It is, however, willing to negotiate wages and hours worked.
Best of luck with your applications!

The election at Brown University has concluded and the results were announced earlier today. Approximately 60% of the graduate school students voted to unionize. Stand Up for Graduate Student Employees and the American Federation of Teachers will begin representing the roughly 900 grad students that work as teaching assistants, research assistants or proctors.
Best of luck with your applications!

BU Today reported Boston University is now offering a new vacation policy and improved dental insurance for its Ph.D. students. We think this is wonderful. We also very strongly believe this is being done to lower the students’ incentive to form a union.
Perhaps we’re jaded. But that’s our belief.

The Illinois legislature has sent Governor J.B. Pritzker a bill that would allow research assistants working in Illinois public universities to be classified as formal employees. Thus making it easier for them to unionize. The previous governor vetoed a similar bill.
