    Hello everyone!

Graduate students at Washington University in St. Louis voted against unionization by vote of 216 to 174. Naturally, the story doesn’t end so simply as exactly 174 ballots have been challenged with 173 being challenged by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and one by the university.

Best of luck with your applications!

    Hello everyone!

Several Northwestern University student groups protested to support a union for non tenure eligible faculty and its right to bargain with the university. Northwestern is refusing to bargain until the union withdraws its objections to 25 uncounted ballots that could ultimately swing the June 2016 election.

Best of luck with your applications!

The Washington Post reports Georgetown University refused to support a graduate school union and argued, predictably, that teaching assistants are students and not employees.

    Hello everyone!

If you’re not already aware, the current proposed tax bill could make the graduate school tuition that is often waived in exchange for teaching and research taxable. This potential tax hit is likely to even further propel current graduate school unionization efforts. Expect this to become a union “rallying call” if it is included in new tax legislation.

Best of luck with your applications!

    Hello everyone!

Columbia University lost its objection to UAW representation of its graduate student union this week after the NLRB stated, “The Petitioner won by a 979-vote margin. In these circumstances, we find no reasonable doubt as to the fairness and validity of the election.” Graduate students are obviously more hopeful now that bargaining will soon commence.

    Hello everyone!

Graduate students at University of Pennsylvania have earned the right to vote on unionization. It’s not a clear-cut victory for the union efforts, however, as Penn successfully argued that graduate students at Wharton and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences should be included in the vote. These groups are believed to be less supportive of unionization and the union organizers did not include either of these schools in their initial petition.

Best of luck with your applications!

    Hello everyone!

The Chicago Sun Times has a nice article about how colleges may now be stalling on union negotiations as they await a more employer-friendly National Labor Relations Board with President Trump appointees.

We did note this possibility in the very first post of this thread though all the polls indicated Trump was badly trailing Hillary and that was likely why Harvard decided “it wasn’t worth playing that card.”

    Hello everyone!

Local 33-UNITE HERE notified Yale yesterday that they are no longer seeking to represent the graduate students. The union cited President Trump’s election and the resulting odds the NLRB will no longer be sympathetic to its cause.
