The University of New Hampshire became the first US college to accept the gaokao in lieu of the SAT or ACT from Chinese applicants. Victoria Dutcher, the school’s vice president of enrollment management, stated, “The University of New Hampshire recognizes the level of rigor required for the intensive gaokao. We also have a long tradition at our university of placing more weight on academic performance and subject knowledge than on standardized tests like the SAT.”
We believe this move is long overdue and will likely be copied by other US schools rather shortly. The significance of the SAT and ACT have been in decline for quite some time and we believe the gaokao has better security than either of the US tests given the many recent news headlines.
