ModeratorHello everyone!
Cornell is moving ahead with plans for its College of Business which will combine the School of Hotel Administration (SHA), the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management and the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management. This is happening despite objections from students and alumni that the individual schools will lose their identities and potentially weaken their strengths. SHA students in particular seem to be very concerned about the ramifications the new b-school could have on their school’s rankings, high satisfaction levels and focus on real estate and entrepreneurship.
Earlier this week, Cornell attempted to clarify its plans by announcing the individual schools will retain their own unique cultures by maintaining their own deans and retaining control over their admissions processes, curricula and philosophies. The fragmentation of the business school has been an identified problem for the university since 2008 and an example was given for how each of the three schools was trying to recruit a finance professor which means the schools were effectively competing against each other.
So what do you think of the plans for a College of Business? Do you think it can work given the three schools will retain their own deans and identities? Do you think they can hire new faculty to work across all three schools? Please share your comments below.
Best of luck with your applications!
