    Hello everyone!

Eastern Carolina University is partnering with IBM’s Watson to see if application essays have predictive value for college success and graduation rates. There have been rapid advances made in natural-language processing in the past few years and we suppose it’s feasible technology could now exist to study the sincerity of their commitments to the schools and, thus, gauge who is most likely to be happy and succeed.

We also suppose this could potentially open a Pandora’s box of concerns regarding privacy and implicit bias. However, if the study does find a strong correlation, we firmly believe the tech sector will work hard to find ways to alleviate those concerns as enrollment management is a large and profitable field!

Best of luck with your applications!

    Sincerely,
