    Hello everyone!

Alaska Dispatch News reports that there is a chance Alaska may be pulling out of WWAMI as the state’s house of representatives passed an operating budget calling for the program to end with this year’s entering cohort to the University of Washington School of Medicine. Of course, the senate has not yet reviewed the measure and WWAMI has hired a lobbyist to help fight it. (Which shows just how much money is at stake for the 20 Alaskan students who enter U of W every year.)

The three burning questions should Alaska end its funding for WWAMI are:
    (1) What options do Alaska residents pursue?
    (2) Does Alaska’s physician shortage worsen?
    (3) What becomes of those 20 slots at U of W?

While we won’t pretend to have a crystal ball, we believe fewer Alaskan residents would pursue medical school, the physician shortage would worsen and those 20 slots would end up going to non WWAMI residents.

Best of luck with your applications!

    Sincerely,

By the time Alaskans realize how badly they screwed themselves, they’re going to have a minimum of 5 years to start to address the problem.

Pay more money to doctors. Cheaper than paying smaller salary and their medical school costs.
