    Hello everyone!

The Spokesman-Review has a nice write up about recent criticism from Washington State University president Elson Floyd directed at University of Washington, currently the only medical school for the five Western states of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho which are often collectively referred to as WWAMI.

The article explains that Washington State University indicated a willingness to start its own medical school if it couldn’t reach a better agreement with UW in regards to second-year medical student enrollment at the WSU Spokane campus.

The article quotes University of Washington President Michael Young as saying, “Good luck. That’s a multimillion-dollar task. They’d be very low-rated for a long time. It would take a lot of time before they’d be able to attract quality students. I’d be surprised if Washington wanted to use its resources that way.”

So, do you guys think a second medical school for the WWAMI region would be a good thing or a bad thing?

Best of luck with your applications!

A second school is a good thing because it means competition. It seems obvious to me from that quote that UW doesn’t want competition or what’s best for the taxpayers that suport him.

    Hello everyone!

Just as a follow up on this, the The Spokesman-Review posted a new article today about how WSU wants to start its own medical school as well as a look at some of their arguments about the need for more physicians in the state of Washington. This is an exciting development for any prospective medical applicants with Washington residency who are still a few years from applying!

Best of luck with your applications!

I agree with competition being good. Looks like both schools are only looking out for themselves. No wonder there is so much cynicism today.

    Hello everyone!

There have been plenty of updates on this developing story (and you’re certainly welcome to talk about them all here) but we figured we’d just keep you updated on the more major developments.

Yesterday, the state senate unanimously passed a bill that would allow WSU to start a medical school in Spokane and the house passed a similar bill with a 12-1 vote. While this still has a long way to go, it’s looking more optimistic that big change is coming to medical education in Washington. In fact, Rep. Larry Haler commented that “care in Eastern Washington is at a critical state” and, after noting smaller states have more medical schools than Washington, that “this is just the beginning.”

    Hello everyone!

Earlier this week, the Washington Senate and House both passed versions of a new law by vote margins of 45-4 and 81-17, respectively that would repeal a restriction dating to 1917 that gives the University of Washington the exclusive right to operate a public medical school in the state. Assuming both legislative bodies can agree which bill should move forward for a final vote, it appears WSU is on its way to opening a new medical school and WWAMI residents may have another viable option for pursuing a career in medicine.

    Hello everyone!

WSU now has the right to start a medical school as a bill has been presented to the governor who is expected to sign it without any pushback. Now WSU just needs money and is expected to ask the legislature for $2.5 million to launch the school in 2017.

    Hello everyone!

We have two updates to this ongoing story:

    1. On June 20, WSU President Elson Floyd passed away. He was the main advocate of Washington’s second medical school and an effort is underway to have the school named after him.

    2. WSU made history when it received $2.5 million from the Washington legislature to open the state’s second publicly funded medical school.

    Hello everyone!

Since we seem to have a running blog of the WSU medical school developments here, I thought I’d add that WSU is now enroll students in 2017 and achieve provisional accreditation and full accreditation in 2019 and 2021, respectively. The school noted that its existing infrastructure for educating nurses, dentists and other healthcare officials is helping them fast track their launch.

    Hello everyone!

The inaugural class at WSU will be participating in a personalized wellness program run by Arivale. The program analyzes individual characteristics such as DNA, saliva, blood and lifestyle to provide customized recommendations on maintaining and improving wellness.

John Tomkowiak, M.D., founding dean of the Elson S. Floyd School of Medicine stated, “Our overarching goal is to be at the forefront of the transformation that is taking place in health care –- and as a newly established medical school, we are uniquely positioned to explore new frontiers in biology and medicine.”

Washington State released its first annual report and it has 60 students with 70 full-time and 94 part-time faculty members. Exactly one third of the applicants (332 out of 996) were offered interviews and all 60 students are Washington residents.

    Hello everyone!

WSU announced earlier today that it received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This accreditation allows WSU to begin pursuing ACGME residency and fellowship training programs. John Tomkowiak, founding dean of the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, stated, “This is a key milestone in enabling us to fulfill our mission of improving health care quality and access in rural and underserved communities in Washington.”
