my MCAT is 35 14verbal 11bio 10phys P writing sample and gpa 3.90+ I am a senior at a small regional private college in Chicago. I have no clinical experience outside labwork at school but am primarily interested in an MD/PHD medical scientist program anyway..
I mainly want to do research and teach rather than practice. The labwork I have been involved in is pretty extensive involving as many as 30 hours per week.. one paid position in Chemistry lab and a research assistant position in the Bio lab.. should lead to publication…. My question is… should I lead with this when applying to med school..or should I do clinical work and other things just to get in then pursue this.

You should post this under the “Ask Admissions Consultants” thread also.

Even MD/PhD’s are expected to work with patients and in patient care. I think a concern for med schools would be that if you’ve never had a strong exposure to the delivery of healthcare, how do you know you want the MD (and PhD) instead of just going to graduate school for a Masters and PhD in whatever research field interests you. If you really aren’t interested in patient care, are you sure you want to go through an MD program (because you still complete the whole MD program)? I would suggest that for your application you should get some clinical experience. The AMCAS application will ask for a personal statement, but secondary applications for MD/PhD programs will give you a chance to explain more thoroughly why you want to go into the MD/PhD program.
