ParticipantHi! Raja,
I am interested in applying to ISB for a course specialising in Finance (Portfolio Management). I have 7 years of work experience in the IT field and I am at present working for a client in UK. What are the job chances of someone who wants to shift career from IT to IB since the course is only for a year? Since my present assignment will get over sometime in March, is it possible (if selected!!) for me to have my interview in London (alumni/phone)
Thanks
Viv

Just a little note on the school – ISB has a one year MBA program. It has tie-ups with Wharton, Kellogg and LBS, and shares faculty with these schools. For further information, you could visit the school’s website at http://www.isb.edu .

ParticipantMost b-schools see more local recruitment than national/international. ISB is trying to improve on this statistic by focussing on Asia Pacific and European placements. We are seeing increased international job postings this year, and have had many firms that had not visited us in prior years.
Job switching is tough, but doable. Many IT background people have successfully become i-bankers in the previous batches. ISB’s one-year program has similar number of contact hours as many two-year programs. So you get up to speed on course material, but you would be expected to work harder in your area of interest to make that switch possible.quote:
Originally posted by careless_hunterWish to know why ISB has such a low number of international offers inspite of the claims that it is a global school. Are there any steps ISB is taking to increase international firms visiting the campus for recruitment ? Can we expect to see the number of international offers increase in next two years?
Another question is regarding the career shift. Since, its just one year program and recruitments happen in Nov-Dec if not sooner, what could be an addition done in 6 months to any ISB student that he/she gets a place in wall street or work for an M&A equation in some consulting assignment. In short, what is a typical profile of a student which makes it finally to the IB or McK kind of firms. Is it that, CAs or someone already working on such roles/functional areas are the ones who get into these firms ? How do ISB help if someone wish to switch the industry altogether such as switching from IT to IB rather than switching just roles such as from project deliveries to business development.
Please let us know your views on the above questions for us to be better aware of what to expect out of ISB and make a practical decision regarding admission.
Thanks

ParticipantISB’s MBA is a general MBA with possibilities of majoring in one/two of five areas – Eco and Public Policy is not one of them.
Almost all ISB professors are excellent, and so is the Economics one.
I don’t think the organizations you have mentioned come to ISB for campus recruitment. In that case, you would have to sell yourself to them directly.quote:
Originally posted by sachingoelI am interested in MBA in the field of Economics and Public Policy. I saw that ISB offers this selection. What are the recruitment options? How would you rate ISB professors in this area? I am targeting institutions like UN, World Bank, ADB post MBA. Please advise where ISB fits in. Also, it will be a major career shift for me as I am currently with IT. So, will one-year ISB program be sufficient?

ParticipantISB’s program is recognized in the US for PhD programs.

ParticipantCareer switches are possible but difficult. I think most people who wanted a switch were able to do that last year.
Overseas applicants are interviewed over phone.quote:

ParticipantHi Raja,
This is Kranthi, I have been short listed for interview for PGP 2005-2006 and I have a interview on 6th Jan. It would be great if you could help me for the interview process by guiding in the right direction. I mean if you let me know what sorts of questions I can expect.
Can you also let me know what the ratio of interviewed applicants to admitted aplicants is?

ParticipantSorry for the late reply. I guess by now you would have interviewed. The first round results will come out on 15th Jan.
The interviewers usually tend to ask questions to know more about you as a person. There are also questions on examples from work place where you showed leadership, teamwork, conflict management etc. And obviously why MBA, your career goals and how ISB fits in.
My belief is that about 40% of applicants interviewed get selected. But I may be off the mark.
Good luck.

Participanthi vineet,
… first of all allow me to congratulate you and your batchmates for remarkable placements achieved this year.I am seriously considering applying to be part of ISB next year i.e. 2006. I am 28 years old and have about 6 years of work-ex, all of which is as an IT consultant including 3+years(and continuing) of overseas exp with one of the world’s top investment banks for their interest rate derivatives business. From educational perspective i’ve done my engineering from one of the better colleges in India and while i’ve never been tops in my class but i’ve def been able to maintain a healthy percentage which has always bordered on near tops. I will be appearing for my GMAT shortly and should be able to score 700+ and great recommendations from current employers should not be a problem at all…
The questions that i need to clarify are
1.) How good are my chances of admission as there is no dearth of good IT consultants aspiring to be MBAs anyway? I know a lot depends on essay and interview but roughly speaking what is your opinion?
2.) Will a stint at ISB help me get footing as a consultant specialising in IT solutions for Finance biz? Do courses/electives exist which will help me hone my capabilities? i’ve seen the course list on the website but i am not quite sure if any of that would help me sell myself as what i’ve stated above..
3.) I dont want to make a switch to another field e.g marketing so how good/bad is the recruitment scenario in the field of IT consulting? I shall be particularly interested in opportunities based in India itself but that is not a necessary criterion.
4.) What is the range of salaries in IT consulting field offered at ISB. This is prob most imp factor for me as i have to weigh in my salary in India when i return against what i expect after graduating. Of course total impact over the years matters but this info will be quite handy to arrive at a realistic level of expectations.
5.) I’ve seen ‘n’ number of sources but haven’t come across even a single instance where anyone has ever mentioned salaries at the lowest end of the spectrum [
]. While i dont blame anyone for not mentioning that but that would be one of the “good to know” things. So hows it at ISB? (please feel more than welcome to ignore this ques if its too uncomfortable[
] )… and finally thanks a lot for reading thru a long post
regards

ParticipantFirst of all, many thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
A quick question (when you can):
Ques: Since ISB is not recognized by Indian’s governing bodies and can’t grant degrees and diplomas, what is it that graduated receive at the end of the program?
Many Thanks in advance,

ParticipantHI
I am Balvinder Singh, currently working in a MNC-Siemens, as Application engineer for CNC machines (basically Automation Industry). Before this I have worked with Fanuc and Saint Gobain. I have done M.Tech in Mechatronics and always have been in technical field. I have 5 years of experience.
Lately, I am realizing that this field would not offer me much career prospects in long run as the growth in this industry is very slow for technical people. I want to expand my horizons and future prospects by perusing M.B.A from ISB. But, since I belong to pure technical background I am confused as to weather I would get a job according to my caliber or would it be pure non technical marketing kind of job? I am comfortable in being a part of planning or monitoring or may be operations handling but do not know if such openings will be available
> through ISB or not. I am very much interested in joining ISB but these doubts are stopping me from taking a final decision. Can you please enlighten me as to what prospects would I hold, keeping in mind my technical background.Waiting for a prompt reply.
Thanks and regards,
