Any 4-year college/university that awards bachelor’s degrees is a good place to go to prepare for medical school. The medical schools do know, however, which schools are harder than others (especially in terms of grades), so a 3.5 at State University might not get as much credit as a 3.5 at Stanford. If you go to http://www.aamc.org you can read about general curriculum requirements but basically you can complete almost any major and also complete the premed courses and you’ll be good to go.
As for the war veteran thing, I don’t think you get special consideration from medical schools. However, military service is viewed as an example of leadership, dedication and character, all of which are considered very favorably in a medical school application.
