I am finishing my first semester of my sophomore year at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) & I am very worried about getting into medical school. My overall GPA as of right now is a 2.19. I hope to go to medical school but due to some personal issues my first two years of college I am worried that possibility is gone. I failed 2 of my classes due to tearing my ACL & Meniscus (with surgery & all of the appointments I missed out on class a lot & it was too late to drop my classes by that time). I am an out of state student from California, the first to graduate high school & go onto college, & I am 100 % Mexican. I don’t know if that helps but thats my background. I also have been paying for school on my own & have 3 jobs since my start. One of my jobs has been at the medical school working in a lab. I have not started my pre-med classes yet but will be starting them in 2011. Should I even bother though? I have wanted to be a doctor all of my life & know that with all of my difficulties behind me I can improve my grades but do you think that will be enough to get into a decent medical school if I do raise my grades & keep gaining experience at the University of Michigan’s medical school? I also have the choice of staying in Ann Arbor for an extra year & holding off on medical school for an additional year. As the first in my family to go through any of this I am completely lost in who I should talk to or what direction I should go. Thank you.
