Like many others I had a great deal of trouble in my undergrad years. Long story short, my family was homeless twice (house fire and foreclosure), my father was diagnosed with Hep B, I was diagnosed with Hep B, and he subsequently died from liver cancer, all the while I was working full time. I wound up with a 2.6 cumulative and while the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do with my life is become a doctor I decided that it would be a waste of my time and money because my GPA was so low. I started a Master’s degree program because I put myself in about $120,000 of debt and I didn’t want to die while still paying it off. Recently I’ve been thinking about what I’m going to do after the Master’s degree, as I’d like to continue on with my education.

I know that there is essentially no chance of me going to an allopathic medical school in the US so I wanted some advice from people who may have gone other routes, specifically I’m considering a PhD, an MD from a Caribbean school, or maybe an off chance of getting into DO school. I’m worried about putting myself in $350,000 of debt and then never getting a residency, but I can’t stop thinking about med school. However, I’m also concerned about restrictions there may be for doctor’s with Hep B or other blood-borne diseases, so advice from someone in a similar situation would be helpful. In addition, I’d like to explain why I performed so poorly in my undergraduate classes, but I have no idea how to go about it in a way that doesn’t sound like I’m whining. Anyway thanks for your time and sorry it’s so long and TMI, any advice is appreciated though !
