ParticipantI go to a private liberal arts college with a good reputation.
Major: Neuroscience
Minor: Classical LanguagesGPA: 3.35 (just finished my soph year, going to get it up)
MCAT: haven’t taken it yet but I’m already studying.Problem – I love science. I don’t like theoretical math.
Other things about me:
-I know Spanish
-I know Latin – was accepted into a Humanities Honor Society
-3+ years of hospice volunteering (doing EVERYTHING – even PRN meds)
-gone overseas (and will go again) to work in a wound clinic and with the dying
-research project next year in school
-research projects over the summer
-I want to go into primary care…either psychiatry or geriatricsAs in all my science classes (except B+ in General Chem during Freshman year, I had mono!) As in all my Latin/Ancient Greek classes.
-retaking Calc and Physics at a 4 year school this summer (got Cs in them so I want to get my grade up! I know I will do better!)The med school I want to get into is in the top 50 of schools, I believe. BOTH of my parents went there. Mom was a female chief resident. Both are successful doctors now. I have a real feel for the medical field through them. I also know at least 4 people who have attended it and are still affiliated.
I am confident in myself and am willing to work hard and learn a lot! I know I will be a great doctor. I love deductive reasoning.
So what do you think my chances are?

KeymasterHi iluvwolves and thanks for joining Admissions Boards!
The GPA seems a bit low and I wonder why you would want to transfer now when it may take time to adjust to the new school and the med schools may not be so forgiving of that adjustment period.
Best of luck!

Participanti there!
No no, I’m not transferring colleges.
I’m just re-taking my Physics and Calc courses over the summer at a local, reputable 4 year school.
I am doing this because I got a C in both and my college won’t let me re-take the courses because I didn’t fail…I just got a C. So I am retaking them at the University which has the medical school that I really, really want to get into. (parents went there)
I was told that it was better to re-take the classes at a good 4 year school and NOT a community college.
I think it was those 2 courses that really brought down my GPA. All my other science courses have gone well.
My GPA in my sophomore year (overall) was a 3.6. I didn’t do so well my freshman year due to mono but as you can see, I’m making up for it fast!
Thank you.

KeymasterThanks for the clarification.
It is better to take classes at good 4 year schools than 2 year schools.
Best of luck!

ParticipantThank you.
Yep, I’m taking them at a very good 4 year school. The calc and physics only go toward my premed requirements, not my major, so I don’t even have to get them transferred in. I may just send the separate transcript to the med school.
My parents (both MDs) and my professors suggested against the community college so I’m following their advice.
Thanks again for your advice.
