In 2008 I graduated from the University of Arizona with a BS in Psych, minor in Business Administration, GPA 3.4. My science classes did not go so well, since during my undergrad I was primarily focused on just graduating. I got an A in Calc, but a B in Physics I, C in Bio I, and I then took Bio II and Phys II at the CC level. In college, I was not focused on much except having a good time and graduating, but this kind of approach has changed significantly for me in the past year.
Over this last year I have been working as a case manager for therapeutic foster families that treat high-needs children who have been sexually and/or physically abused. Working in this field, I have realized what I really crave is the clinical aspect to any and all kinds of treatment, and my dream of going to medical school that I teased off and on throughout college has begun to solidify into a concrete goal. I have been volunteering in transport once a week at a large hospital (two months so far), I am taking a more rigorous Calc I online through a CC, and I plan to start volunteering in hospice care. I am set to take Chem I, Calc II, and Anatomy next semester, and I will be working full to part-time in either hospital transport or as an ER medical scribe.
My question is that after Chem I & II and OChem I & II, will good grades in those classes coupled with a good MCAT score be enough for admission into a DO or MD program? I am a very good test taker, so I feel I need to really shine on the MCAT. But the thorn in my side continues to be my weak performance in Biology (which I am now studying it in my spare time and plan to audit the course). Are there second chances for unfocused undergrads like myself? Should I look into post-grad programs? I am still in AZ by the way.
