Hello,
I just had my first medical school interview, and I have some concerns. There were comments that one of my interviewers made to me that seemed very inappropriate and slightly offended me. Does this usually happen in interviews; do they try to get you frustrated or to offend you and see how you react?
Some of the comments she made were about my family/ parents (Both of them have been previously married, so my brothers and sisters are much older), slightly racist comments about me having an African Studies minor (even though I’m white), and demeaning comments about my volunteering experiences. For instance, I have volunteered in Pediatrics for three years and she stated, “Oh, so you held babies all day? No REAL experience.” and regarding a medical mission trip, “Well, that’s great that you spent your time going to other countries, but I think it’s more important to help your own country.” Comments like this that made me feel uncomfortable. I defended my work, highlighting the things that I did learn and did experience, but overall I felt very put down after this interview.
I am just wondering if this is normal/ appropriate for an interviewer, and if I should do anything about it.
Thanks for the advice!
