ParticipantI only have one experience with this and I’m not going to claim to be an expert. I’m just hoping others may have a view to share even if it’s just “I dunno”.
I’m dogsitting for a friend and his dog is a black or close to it german sheperd. When I take him for walks people seem to be scared. I’m not sure if it’s his size and breed or if the dark color plays a role.
I think it’s stupid to judge a dog based on his fur color and I don’t think people would do this but we know many people judge others on their skin color.
Anyone who owns a black dog care to comment. It could just be based on my limited experinces with my friend’s dog.

ParticipantI dunno. Black is an unusual color for a German Sheperd and there might be fear of unkonwn. Black dogs like Rotties and Dobermins are intimidating because of breeding. (Even if most of them are pretty cool.)
I can’t believe anyone would be afraid of a black toy poodle [:0] but could be wrong.
Best test would be to see how ppl react to a yellow lab and black lab of same size and personality.

ParticipantGerman sheperds are also intimidating-looking dogs. They are one of the breeds that are closer to wolves. Maybe that scares some people.

ParticipantThere will always be a few irrational people but no I don’t think this is a widespread phenomenon. I agree with Posc about looking at yellow and black labs and there are way too many black and chocolate labs being bred and sold for this to be widespread.

ParticipantFor reasons sketched out above, no I dont think people are racist towards dark fur dogs.

ParticipantI don’t see how anyone could hate dogs at all. Except maybe some of the little ones that yap and bite everything (lot of anger, small container [8D]). Dogs are great. Did anyone read the latest findings that dogs do indeed have the ability to develop a small vocabulary of human words? Here is a link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5180799/

We called that small dog syndrome in my nieghborhood growing up.
That article was a good read. Shame on anyone who thought all dog lovers were crazy for talking to tehir dogs. [}
] But rather than spend money on research, just try calling a dog by his name. A funny thing will happen. The dog will recognize his name and respond. [:0] They also quickly learn the words “walk” and “treat”. I bet the majority of English speaking homes with dogs spell these words all the time.P.S. We had dogs growing up. Thank God they were healthy and we didn’t have to say “vet” frequently.
