I don’t know if everyone saw today’s (Wednesday, April 7) Wall Street Journal, but there is an interesting article that begins on page D1 about HBS and Wharton curbing their participation in the ranking surveys. According to the article, these two schools are going to cease providing the media outlets with contact information about their students and alumni. (Information such as GMAT scores will continue to be provided.)

Unlike similar efforts made amongst the undergraduate institutions against rankings in the past and the effort HBS made in the mid to late 90s to stop accepting GMAT scores, we believe that there is some support from the other top schools for these moves. We don’t believe, however, the lower-ranked schools will follow track as they stand to gain much through continued participation in these rankings.

Best of luck with your applications!

    Sincerely,

Business school is a big decision and even if it takes a bit of their time and effort, I personally say make as much information available as possible. Investor relations does that for shareholders and I don’t see why Harvard and Wharton are any different.

I think the information the rankings add is pretty worthless to end users but expensive for the schools to provide. I hope the other schools follow Wharton and HBS.
