My daughter has her sights set on NYU. She wants a nutrition major at the Steinhart School. She attends private school so her grades are decent, but not straight A’s. Her SAT scores are around 1150 (old format) with no study. Since the last test she has put in a lot of study time which should bring up her SAT scores. She plays varsity sports year round, has taken four AP courses, and has about 80 hours of community service. She is contemplating her college essay and wants to write about her past struggles with Bulimia (she is recovered). Do you think this is a good topic for a college admission essay? Also, would early decision be a good idea as opposed to waiting for regular admission?

I think writing about bulimia is one of those things…it has been done before but could make a good essay depending on her particular approach to it. I definitely wouldn’t rule it out. Have her write a few drafts and see how it turns out.
