A growing number of U.S. law schools are offering classes about the law and national and international security issues, the New York Observer reports.

Duke University law professor told the Observer that such classes essentially did not exist two to three decades ago. Today, the classes not only exist, but are among the most popular course offerings.

Educators say that 9/11 and its aftermath led to the spread of national security law courses. A growing number of students want to put their legal training to work as investigators, prosecutors, and advocates for the civil rights aspects of national security cases.

National security law is too new as a legal specialty for any clear career tracks to have developed. In many cases, however, the people working in national security law positions became interested in the topic while in law school, interned with an appropriate organization, and held a judicial clerkship after graduation.
