Hi, my name is Mostayn Alam. I am a Canadian Citizen and I am currently a second year medical student at the University of Southampton School Of Medicine in the UK (England). I completed my BSc with honours at the University of Ottawa, Canada in Biopharmaceutical Sciences in 2004. I know that transfer into 3rd year or any other year into a US institution is virtually impossible but is there any way in which this can be acheived. I am well aware of requiring the USMLE step 1 prior to beginning clerkship in the 3rd year at all US institutions.
Secondly I want to know what is the best route for me to enter residency in the US after I have completed my BM (M.D equivalent) from England or how i would go about doing this. According to new stats my university happens to be 3rd overall in the country for medicine after the universitites of Oxford and Cambridge, both of which are world reknowned institutions.
I have to do a 10 week elective outside England in my 4th year and I am considering doing so at a US intitution/hospital. I have many questions and not too many resources avaialble to know my options for returning to North America, particularly the US.
I am aware of getting a ECFMG certification and also finishing both USMLE 1 and 2. My major problem arises from the timing of it all, I have to start my third year here doing clinical rotations in September and i am not done with this year till July and August is my elective prior to 4th year. In the UK, the M.D program is 5 years in length, with the 4th year being dedicated to research for 24 weeks and the rest is clerkship in the specialist fields such as Dermatology and opthalmology.
So i would like to know what time frame is good and also if i could try and transfer after 3rd year if i complete my USMLE Step 1. Any help will be appreciated, i can have more questions once my initial ones are answered.
