ParticipantHi,
I would like an honest opinion from someone here. My undergrad GPA with two degrees (Biology and Dairy Science) is rather poor at a 2.75, and my MCAT score is 40. My husband and I plan on applying to schools together, and I have heard that some schools really like bringing in couples together. He has applied and been denied twice before, but he had better qualifications than most people going in, GPA 3.9, MCAT 40, but he is a white male who is the son of a doctor. (also I think his MCAT was lower the first time around.
I am a white female, daughter of two poor dairy farmers, neither of which went to college, I have decent experience in health care (acute rehab center at a hospital) and research (with a swine influenza lab at the USDA. I have a lot of great references, and can write a beautiful sob story about all the hardships I went through in high school all the way through college and how all that made me realize my dream of becoming a doctor. How much of a shot do you think I have? Does applying as a couple help our chances at all?
Also I have my EMT certification and hope to find employment in that area within the next year, and I am considering beginning working toward my paramedic certification sometime in the next year while waiting on med school.
I just turned 23, so I have some time to work on things, any recommendations? Thank you!December 9, 2011 at 5:26 pm #37498mod
KeymasterHi hhorst121 and welcome to Admissions Boards!
If you can repost this in the Ask Admissions Consultants thread in the medical section, I’m sure you will get a much better answer than you can get here.
Best of luck with your medical school endeavors!

ModeratorHi and thanks for your inquiry.
Hi. I’m having some trouble getting started with my essay and my deadline is in less then 2 weeks. Any tips to help me get started?
The first thing you need to do is take a holistic view of your candidacy. What points do you need to make to substantiate your selected story themes and wow factors? Do you have any weaknesses you need to mitigate? And after you map out all the aspects of your application (letters of reference, activity statement, etc.), you must make sure you answer the question being asked and that you keep your thesis in mind as you begin to draft your essay. You can call us at 703.242.5885 to discuss your particular profile in more depth.
Best of luck with your applications!

My son is going into his senior year in high school. He currently has a 4.2 weighted GPA (3.59 unweighted), and a 28 on the ACT. He has been taking ACT review courses this summer, and is scoring in the 29-31 range on all areas of the test, so we’re hopeful he can improve his ACT score. Additionally, he will graduate with about 375-400 volunteer hours between working as a Jr. Camp Counseslor at our park district, working at up to 3 hospitals in a summer (3 summers going back to jr. high), and serving on a youth board of directors (including being elected to an executive board position this year). He also recently received his Pharmacy Technician license, so he has been volunteering in a Walgreens pharmacy this summer. He also plays 2 varsity sports, sang in choir, has been a member of Key Club all 4 years, and was nominated to NHS his junior year. Will he have any trouble getting into Drake University’s Pharmacy program? Also – Can you tell me other strong pharmacy programs that he should consider, based on his resume?
He certainly looks like he could be competitive depending on a number of factors including which program he is looking for (bachelor or PharmD) and his story themes and wow factors.
You can call us to discuss your son’s situation in more detail but it it’s not feasible to opine on his fit without a lot more detailed information.
Thanks in advance!
Best of luck with your applications!

ParticipantGreetings.
I’m a junior in HS. My GPA is 3.5 unweighted and 3.9 weighted and I haven’t taken the SAT yet, but assuming I get a 1700 (like the PSAT (I know it’s not great at all…)) do I stand a chance of being competitive at any of the following? (I know they’re quite scattered, but then so am I. I like to be faced with (some) volition as opposed to denial).
St John’s College (MD)
Willamette University
Lewis and Clark University
College of Wooster
Washington University, Seattle?

ParticipantHello, I was wondering what time of year you would recomend someone to take the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. Also what year should I take it (sophomore, junior).
Thanks.

Great question. Unfortunately, it has a clear as mud answer for this discussion board as our recommendations are very specific to our clients and their particular characteristics. Therefore, the best I can tell you is to take the SAT (I and II) and/or ACT when you feel you are adequately prepared to reach your full potential. The caveat, however, is you want to take these exams before you submit your college applications and you may want to allow time in case you find yourself in a position where you need to retake a test.
Thanks.
Best of luck with your applications!

ParticipantHey, I was wondering what my chances of getting into a four year college are. My freshmen year GPA was 3.5, sophomore 3.1, and I’m a junior now, first trimester 2.5, second 3.0, and last I’m hoping for 3.6. I have not yet taken the SAT’s, but my practice tests show 1700-2050. I go to one of the best public high schools in my state. All the courses I took in freshmen and sophomore year were the highest possible. This year I’m taking 1 AP, highest level offered for math, and English. I’m taking normal history and Spanish otherwise. I do a lot of volunteering, and spent one summer volunteering at a hospital. I am also a CTY scholar. Thanks.

ParticipantI was wondering what are my chances of getting into either RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) or University of Massachusetts – Amherst.
My GPA is a 3.15 with SAT score of 1260 (Critical Reading 400 Math 460 Writing 400) I know that those scores are not the best, but I tried. My ACT score is a composite of 19 (Math 19 English 18 Science 20)Current Senior Year Courses: AP Chemistry, AP Chemistry Lab, Pre-Cal. and Trig, Mystery Honors, Independent Study – Studio 4
I work at Coldstone Creamery and YWCA. I volunteer for American Red Cross at food pantries and walks to raise money for 3 years. I am a mentor in a I Know English Mentor Group helping children who attend middle schools in Malden area in ESL classes. I presented at the Massachusetts Peer Leadership Institute 2011 at Northeastern regrading healthy and unhealthy relationships. I was also part of a Youth Buddhist group (GDPT) for about 3 years.

I see no reason why you shouldn’t be competitive at a 4 year school.

I believe the deadline for RIT passed on February 1. If you have already applied, the best thing I can tell you is to stay patient. There’s nothing you can do until you hear back from the schools.
Best of luck with your applications!

ParticipantHello

I’m a senior in high school, it’s my last semester, and I can honestly say I’m completely stressed out. This being said, all I’m asking for is something to give me hope I have a GPA of a 2.2, and I’m sure when colleges look at my transcript all they see is a lazy student that fooled around in her four years of high school. However that’s not true, I have Sickle Cell Disease, and about three times a year I get admitted to a hospital for about a month. See in reality I’m not lazy, I try my hardest and believe it or not I succeeded in what I have attempted to do. I have brought 20’s up to 70’s and 80’s and I’m proud of myself, my families proud of me, but those are people that love me, colleges don’t know my experiences, and I doubt they care. My top colleges are Albany State University, Savannah State University, and Fort Valley State University, they all need a GPA of about a 2.2 and yes, I can say I have that ,but what makes me any special from anybody else. I feel as if colleges want somebody who exceeds their expectations, and I’m not sure I do, my GPA consist of Math: 480 Critical Reading : 480 they require an SAT score of Math:400 Critical Reading: 430, I have two years of honors Lit and one year of A.P Psychology, my extra curriculum activities consist of Students Against Destructive Decision, Prom Committee, and FCCLA. People tell me I should try a community college first, but for once in my life I want to do, what I want to do. I rather not let my illness hold me back forever, and although there is nothing wrong with community college, it’s just something I really want to do . I have gotten a lot better now that I have gotten older, due to the fact that, it tends to affect you more at a younger age. So, now that I have given you some of my background information, my question is what are my chances of getting into my colleges of choice? What should I do to make my chances higher in getting into a college? -
