I need help for the following questions:

MCAT=33, GPA=3.5 (from an Ivy), a lot of research work in Bio(>3 years), leadership roles, and clinic experience in the local hospital as volunteer.

What is the chance to get to an average medical school?

    Thanks,

    Robert

My question is because my GPA is lacking and I need to show the admission board that I can handle the course load at medical school, should I enroll in a lot of science classes at once and get A’s on all of them to demonstrate my capability? For example if the average student enrolls in 4 classes per semester, I will enroll in 5-6 upper div science and obtain A’s on all of them. If I continue this for 3 semesters + 1 summer, will it be beneficial?

    Thank you

    Dear Shffl,
Thanks for your question. Sorry to take so long to get back. Indeed, it is a good idea to take more course work. But make sure you are taking advanced, upper level courses. More A’s will be helpful to show that you are ready for medical school.

Hello, I am currently in my Junior year at the University of Tennessee. I have a cum gpa of 3.3 and a science gpa of 3.1. I have worked full time at a local hospital for 3 years and have CPR, ACLS, and Advanced cardiac telemetry certifications. I have outstanding LORS,170 hours of volunteer work, and numerous leadership roles. Also, I have visited LMU-DCOM ( to get my name in the mix )and know numerous faculty. I was wondering how competitive I would be for that school as well as all others.I have seen the average GPA and MCAT for LMU, but I was wondering how well they looked upon the rest of the application as well as being a local applicant. I plan on taking the MCAT this spring. Thanks for your Help!

    Dear Egoodwi4,
Thanks for your question. It’s hard to give a precise answer. I suggest that you look at the average GPA’s and MCAT scores for matriculants at LMU for the past few years. That will give you an idea of the MCAT score you will need to get. However, my sense is that your GPA may be a bit low and that you may need to complete more upper level science courses with A’s to show that you are ready, academically, for medical school. Hope this helps.

Hi there, I would just like to know what my chances are of getting into an MD school (not in the Carribean).. and if I have a good chance at any in particular.

    GPA: 3.3
    MCAT: 12 BS 10 VR 8 PS
I’ve volunteered/had leadership positions all throughout college, done research for several years and plan to take a year off to continue volunteering at hospitals/shadowing doctors and working. Thanks!

    Minors: Chemistry
with a certificate in Helping Professions

    from the University of Pittsburgh

also studied abroad at the University of Melbourne in Australia

    Dear 1pa4,
Thanks for your question. Based on the data you provide, it’s a close call-the 8 on your PS will be a concern. But it’s possible you might be competitive, especially in medical schools in the state in which you are a resident. Let us know if you want a more detailed analysis of your situation.

    Dear AdmissionsConsultants,

I have recently graduated with highest honors from my honors college with a 3.5 overall GPA, having completed an extensive honors thesis in cardiac immunology. I have worked over a year at a private and also a government hospital as a heart monitor tech, and have shadowed interns and Sub-I’s as well. I have tested well on practice MCAT’s in the past, but I do not do well on the real thing. I have retaken the MCAT and only scored a 23…stress related maybe?

With more time and practice, I know I can do much better on the MCAT, but I am under the impression that taking the exam a third time would not be beneficial to me. Do you have any advice for me? I feel this exam is the only thing keeping me from achieving my dreams.

    Thank you for any advice!

    Dear Newgraduate,
Thanks for your question. If you want to be competitive for U.S. medical programs, you are going to have to retake the MCAT exam. Other options include U.S. D.O. programs and Caribbean schools.

    Dear AdmissionsConsultants,

I was wondering about my possibilities of acceptance to DO schools, I do not have certain ones in mind, and there are none in the state that I live in.

So, here are some of my credential. I Just started my junior year at Indiana Wesleyan University, a fairly small private school. My GPA suffered first semester freshman year from a lack of being prepared, and family problems. I was doing bad in g chem and was told to fail and retake, so this is what I did. I also got a C+ in a principles of bio class and calculus.

After the first semester I did a 180 and figured out it was going to take a lot more work. I retook g chem and took O chem at Notre Dame over the summer to get back on track. I now have a overall GPA of 3.45 and a biology GPA of 3.36.

I have also done some shadowing, taken a medical mission trip to thailand, and I teach taekwondo at a local school. I also have a job with rescare helping mentally retarded individuals for about 16 hours per week. Lastly I have aprox 300 hours of non clinical community service with my church and local community programs.

My overall question is what kind of MCAT score would I need to get this coming spring in order to get an interview. I have taken practice tests and recieved 28-29 is this high enough?

Thank You for any advise you can provide, I’m really worried at the moment.

    Dear MHCII89,
Thanks for your question. To start with, don’t be worried. It’s a waste of energy. Your situation appears to be overall pretty good. Just keep working and don’t let up. With continuing good grades and a decent a MCAT score you could be competitive at D.O. schools. I would worry about the lowest acceptable score–shoot for the 30’s and you should be ok. You have plenty of time–stay focused for now on your school work. Let us know if we can help further.

Hi, I’m currently a senior biological engineering major with a 2.9 cum GPA. I haven’t taken the MCAT yet. I was wondering if it would be better for me to enroll in a post-bac program or in a one year Master’s of Engineering program (biomedical engineering). Or if it would matter. Thanks.

    Dear Greyeds,
Thanks for your question. Before we get too far into academics I think it’s important to consider your reasons for wanting to go to medical school. Is it out of a well tested range of experiences in health care and being around patients? If not, that’s what I would suggest to do first–get some experience and make sure this is what you want to do. If it is, you will figure out a way to get there. But based on the information you provide, you are probably looking at a post bac at least.
    Good luck,
