MBA app – presenting unofficial work experience

I have additional work experience that’s not really an official job, but adds a lot of value leadership. I considerably assist in a relative’s public sector R&D operation, including helping them manage a substantial budget, inventory, technology resources, etc. Should I add this info to my resume and work experience for my MBA app, or just keep it as a seperate brief essay?
