According to the Institute of International Education (IIE), foreign student enrollment in the US grew by only 0.6% this past year, the smallest increase in 7 years. The slower growth rate is being directly attributed to tougher immigration procedures enacted after the Sept 11 terrorist attacks as well as the perceptions they have given prospective foreign applicants about the difficulties they will face if they apply to US schools.

The IIE estimates foreign students spend $12 billion each year in the US and make valuable contributions through academic research. Many of these foreign students are now studying elsewhere and both Australia and the UK have reported larger increases in the growth rates of their foreign student enrollments.
