I graduated with an engineering degree in 1996. My GPA at my undergrad university was only a 2.5. Now I am taking pre-requisites for med school and have a 4.0 GPA after having taken 7 courses. Is my previous GPA going to prevent me from getting into med school? Am I at a big disadvantage? Thanks for your time.

Everything is fair game in med school admissions. The fact that you’re doing well now is great, but it won’t necessarily negate the fact that you did poorly as an undergraduate. There may be reasons for why you got only a 2.5 as an engineering major, but these are reasons that you would need to explore over the next year or two while you get in gear for application season.

I think working with one of our consultants would benefit you because each of our med school consultants have dealt with applicants in your very position. A 2.5 is not going to end your premedical career, but it creates an obstacle that can only be bypassed with a good application. We can help and if you’d like to try out our services, sign up for an hour and see what you think.

    Good luck.

The reason i got a 2.5 was because school wasn’t my first priority back then not because I couldn’t have done better. I know I’m ready, I’m just worried that me screwing around in undergrad 8 years ago is going to present major problems. If I were to do well (35 or higher) on my MCAT is that enough to show them that I am ready and serious about med school? What MCAT score do you think would shoe me in if I keep my present GPA of a 4.0 and my application is comparable to the general population? I know this is a tough question because you don’t know me and haven’t seen my application but any info you could give me is helpful.
