ParticipantHello,
I find myself in a bit of a quandary in the admissions process… In terms of the all important numbers game, I have a 27Q (8,9,10) but unfortunately a 3.1 GPA. I know these numbers are not the most appealing of candidates, but I do have extensive clinical, volunteering and extracurricular experience. To what extent do you think the “extras” can take me?
Also, after receiving no interview offers at this point I am wondering if anyone can recommend good programs I can apply to now, in March, for possible matriculation this summer or fall?
As a California resident, I can safely safe this is driving me mad!
I am starting to consider foreign schools but am hearing much questionable results from the Mexican and Caribbean schools. Any advice also about Canada, England or any other English speaking schools?
Ahhhhhhhh!!! (Had to get that out)…Thanks for your input all,

Relax. The medical school admissions process can be very frustrating, but navigating it takes patience.
If you haven’t received any interviews at this point, it’s probably safe to say that you likely will not interview this application cycle. Adding more schools to your AMCAS list won’t change matters either as we have already passed most deadlines for med school applications.
Numbers are still very important in getting into med school. Having good “extras” will help out a little, but it won’t likely make up for a sub-par GPA and a below average (for matriculants) MCAT. The average GPA and MCAT for matriculated students over the last several years has been around 3.55 and 29-30.
It’s difficult to give you a concise answer on which foreign med schools are good, so we will defer that to another time. A foreign medical education, you should understand, is a difficult, but viable option.
Again, if we can be of further assistance, please let us know.
Good luck.
