ParticipantOk here’s the story I was an undergrad computer science student at a relatively selective state school in Texas. I wasn’t to impressed by the classes I had to take for my major so I skipped out a lot, didn’t buy a few books, never studied. You know the typical young and stupid routine. I never wanted anything to do with biology until my senior year when all of a sudden I had this crazy urge to be a doctor. I thought it was nuts since my grades at the time we’re just shy of a 3.0, but I figured I’d humor myself and take a few bio classes anyhow. So I signed up for Genetics and Biology-1 and loved it. In fact it didn’t take me long to notice that I was outperforming nearly every other kid in the class and finished out with A’s in both classes. Not only that but that semester I ended up with a really high average, 3.9 boosting my gpa up to just above a 3.0. The next semester, I got even more daring. I took bio-2, Anatomy-1 and biochemistry-1 as well as a 4000 level computer networks class to finish out my degree. This load proved a bit much for me, especially since working 30+ hours a weeks leaves little time for studying. Nonetheless, I still managed to pull off A’s in both bio-2 and biochem-1, and I got a strong B in anatomy-1. Unfortunetly my networks teacher didn’t think anyone who isn’t asian deserves better than a C average (he is no longer employed by the school) so this grade really hurt my semester averger considerablely. Regardless I go somewhere above a 3.2 and earned an A in government over the summer to close out my undergrad gpa just below a 3.1. So here is the breakdown…
Biology I – A
Biology II – A
Biochem I – A
Genetics – A
Anatomy I – BIt should also be noted that at my school biology is taught at a higher level, 2000’s and thus requires chemistry(which i haven’t had) as a prerequisit.
So I took several upper level bio courses and basically aced them without even taking the prereq’s. I know a 3.1 is far from competive at almost every medical school, but I decide to try for an MD and am able to continue this trend do you think I might have a shot at getting in?
Just a thought
