ParticipantHey all, I’m new my name is Roger and I’m a college student in California. I want nothing more than to become a doctor one day. I am a straight A student and I have tons of good extra-curriculars etc. However I am absolutely awful at complex math. Anything starting at pre-cal. I’ve always been like this, its not simply a matter pf try harder or take extra classes. I’m very worried that it will inhibit my success come applications time. and I don’t want to waste my time with all these science classes and stress if my poor math skills will make it next to impossible to get into med school. Any suggestions, or help would be greatly appreciated!
If life gives you a chnace take it. If it changes your life, let it.

ParticipantHi,
I am curious if you got any answers to your question. My son is a senior in High School and wants to become a pediatrican. But he has difficulty in math. His PSAT score was good, but he score a whopping 200 in the math section. OUCH!…He will be taking the SATs soon and I am planning a meeting with his guidence counclor to see if this is possible. I believe he can do it…Anything is possible. But I need to know how to help him.February 19, 2004 at 2:13 pm #26562thymol_blue
ParticipantWell, there aren’t many medical schools that have a math requirement; the only requirements are Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physics. Additionally, many colleges will let people design their majors such that they never have to take a match class throughout their undergraduate years.
However, this may still present a problem. The issue is this: what exactly do you mean by “bad at math”? It’s one thing to say that you cannot handle Calculus and advanced mathematics, and its an entirely different problem to say that you cannot handle basic algebra and geometry. You see, in any Physics class (which is a requirement) there is going to be plenty of basic algebra and geometry, and if you can’t hack that you’ll also have a problem on the MCAT Physics sction as well. If the basic stuff isn’t a problem then you are probably fine.
