California legislative assembly member Adam C. Gray recently introduced a bill to help improve health outcomes for rural parts of the state that includes calls for funding a medical school at UC Merced. California, like every other state, is facing a growing physician shortage that is particularly acute in rural areas. The hope is many of the UC Merced medical students would help fill this particular void.
“The Legislature has patted itself on the back for expanding the number of people in the state with a health insurance card,” said Adam Gray. “Unfortunately, an insurance card is no guarantee of access to a doctor.”
Unfortunately, even if this bill is successful, we don’t think the medical school would open in time for the majority of our readers.
