Undergraduate applications to the University of California schools increased to 206,339 for fall 2016 matriculation. This represents a 6.4% annual gain and the twelfth consecutive year of record-breaking applicants. 166,380 of those applicants were freshmen and the remaining 39,959 were transfers. All nine undergraduate UC campuses experienced application volume increases ranging from 5.8% at Berkeley to 13.5% at Merced.
We’re not surprised application volume continued to increase. The transfer deadline extension undoubtedly helped a bit, but we believe a main drive was the policy announcement to enroll more California residents at all nine of the UC undergraduate campuses. The state’s budget woes and increased enrollment of out of state and international students has helped fuel the application volume boost and we believe it will be a while, even in the “Internet age,” before word spreads that the UCs are no longer so heavily favoring non CA resident applicants.
Best of luck with your applications!
Keep up with us on:
My family has mostly stayed in Califonria because of the UCs. If they get in, we hope they move out of state after graduating.
I feel for you Liger. We feel betrayed too.
