Application volume at University of Pennsylvania set a new record with 40,394 undergraduate applications for the 2016-2017 admission season. There’s been some speculation that making the SAT Subject Test optional contributed to breaking the 40,000 application plateau. Given that 45% of the application volume increase came from overseas, the highest percent the school has seen, there may be validity to that speculation. However, most applicants targeting top schools are well prepared with regards to standardized tests and we believe the increase in domestic applicants is largely due to the increasingly competitive nature of the admission process to the top colleges.
Thanks for the question. Last year, Penn’s acceptance rate was 9.4% with 38,918 applications received. I’d guess the yield remains relatively constant and the acceptance rate will come in closer to 9.0% this year.
