    Hello everyone!

The US Department of Education announced that it is cutting off access to federal student loans to the Charlotte School of Law effective December 31. This decision was based largely on the school’s inability to maintain accreditation with the ABA. Additionally, the DOE concluded that the law school made “substantial misrepresentations to current and prospective students.”

    Hello again everyone!

Just a brief update that the Charlotte Observer has an article about students who feel the for-profit law school intentionally hid its problems.

    Hello everyone!

Just another brief update that classes at Charlotte are still scheduled to begin on January 17 though no update on financial aid was made available. New students will NOT be enrolled this spring amid the school’s current issues.

Best of luck with your applications!

    Hello everyone!

It appears that Charlotte Law is set to starts its spring semester next week. Doing so would jeopardize the chance current students could receive a closed school discharge of their federal student loans. The law school is still in negotiations with the Department of Education and the DOE is advocating for a “teach out” where current students are allowed to complete their class work at an ABA-accredited partner school.

Furthermore, the DOE is allegedly pushing for a full refund or all 1Ls and a closed school loan discharge for all others who don’t complete their degree. We’re hopeful that’s not too bitter a pill for this for-profit to swallow.

Best of luck with your applications!

    Hello everyone!

Yet another developing storyline in this saga is that, according to WFAE, Charlotte School of Law may have paid students to delay taking the bar. The reason behind such a motive, presumably, is that the school was very concerned the students would fail and the delays would allow the school to delay its accreditation issues.

Best of luck with your applications!

    Hello everyone!

Just another update that the Charlotte Observer reports the Charlotte School of Law Alumni Association is now the latest group calling for President Chidi Ogene and Dean Jay Conison to immediately resign. If you’re concerned about a weak candidacy and considering a for-profit law school, please make sure you do extra due diligence and understand the school’s placement and bar passage rates.

    Hello everyone!

Politico reported that North Carolina’s Attorney General, Josh Stein, has opened an investigation into the Charlotte School of Law and “is investigating the school under the state’s civil consumer protection laws and is very concerned about the current situation at the school.”

Stein is also concerned with Charlotte Law’s attempts to for quick reinstatement of federal loans from the Trump administration. The school, which lost over half its students after the fall term is on the hook for the student loans of all students who withdraw within 120 days of a school’s closure. (Even if Charlotte Law is closed, its parent company, InfiniLaw, which owns two other for-profit law schools, would still be liable.) In a letter to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, Stein stressed Charlotte Law and its investors have a “vested interest in continuing to operate to decrease their potential liability” for any loans discharged due to the 120-day rule.

The bottom line is this saga isn’t over yet, so stay tuned and please, please, please be very careful when selecting your target law schools and understand that some of your potential schools may come with significant risks.

A group of Charlotte Law students has filed a class-action lawsuit in federal court claiming that the school misled them about its accreditation status.

    Hello everyone!

WFAE 90.7 is reporting that Charlotte School of Law has to prove its financial stability to the UNC Board of Governors by August 1. Furthermore, the school can not admit new students until it receives the Board’s approval. Finally, the school must receive the ABA’s approval for a “teach out” plan of its remaining students by August 1.

    Hello everyone!

Today is Charlotte Law’s deadline set by the UNC Board of Governors to present proof of compliance with the state’s financial stability requirements. The main requirement is securing a bond to cover prepaid tuition reimbursement in the case the school fails.

If Charlotte Law survives today’s deadline, it still faces an August 10 deadline for approval from the ABA. And, of course, it needs to convince the DOE to allow it to offer federal student loans.
