MIT is opening an English language graduate school (no undergrad classes) just outside of Moscow. The Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (aptly nicknamed “Skoltech”) will have a curriculum managed and designed by MIT with financial backing from the Russian government.
Russian officials are hoping to create tech start-ups and lure corporate research laboratories to the area. Considering the country’s political climate, they have already been very successful in this regard with promises from IBM, Microsoft and Siemens to open centers there as well as a current presence from 52 venture capital firms in the Skolkovo Innovation Centre.
Hopefully the new center will help even better incubate the considerable engineering and innovative talent already in the country.
